Field health contributes to player safety and enjoyment. We can’t play soccer without them! BRYC Recreational Soccer contributes tens of thousands of dollars every year to provide enhanced maintenance for school and park fields.
Rain is good. It makes the grass grow. But playing on rain-soaked fields can quickly destroy them, and we can lose our county permits to boot (pun intended!).
Fairfax County provides both a hotline (703-324-5264) and a
website to provide field closure information for county parks each weekday by 3:00 PM. If the county closes ALL its non-turf fields, then assume that ALL school fields are closed as well unless the BRYC web-site says otherwise. If the county closes some but not all non-turf fields, then it's possible that some school fields will be playable as well, and BRYC will normally provide guidance on the use of school fields via the BRYC hotline (703-354-7101) and/or this web site. Lacking specific guidance, or where that guidance calls for user discretion, BRYC expects coaches to use the county’s own standards and not use a field when:
- There is standing water present in the turf areas
- There are muddy conditions present that will not dry by the start of practice
- While walking on the field, water can be seen or heard with any footstep
- While walking in turf areas, any impression of your footprint is left in the soil surface
- While walking on a bare area, an impression of more than 1/4" deep is left by a footprint
Play safe. Wet fields can lead to excessive slipping and player injury. Playing on wet fields can lead to a loss of our permits. We don’t want either to happen.
